Quick Answer

What does ERR003 mean on a Trimble GPS/GNSS receiver?

Tilt compensation out of range — the pole is tilted beyond the receiver's IMU compensation limit.

Trimble ERR003 Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

Applies to: R10, R12, SPS986

What Does ERR003 Mean?

ERR003 on tilt-compensated Trimble receivers (R10, R12 with Trimble TILT) means the pole tilt angle has exceeded the compensation system's operating range. Trimble's IMU-based tilt compensation allows accurate positions without precisely plumbing the pole — but this has limits. ERR003 appears when the pole angle exceeds approximately 15 degrees from vertical (varies by model and firmware version).

Tilt compensation is valuable but not unlimited. Working on steep slopes, reaching around obstacles, or pressing the pole against a wall at a sharp angle can all trigger ERR003. The receiver is telling you that its tilt compensation model isn't reliable at the current angle — don't force a position shot in this condition.

Common Causes of ERR003

  • Pole tilted more than 15 degrees from vertical during a position shot
  • IMU calibration needed — tilt compensation accuracy degrades if the IMU hasn't been properly calibrated during the current session
  • Receiver in motion during a shot — tilt compensation requires a still or smoothly-moving pole for accurate results
  • Rapid pole movements that exceeded the IMU's tracking rate
  • Damaged IMU from a drop or impact — the inertial sensors can be affected by physical shock

How to Fix Trimble ERR003 — Step by Step

  1. Plumb the pole as accurately as possible — even tilt-compensated receivers are most accurate near vertical.
  2. Recalibrate the IMU: in Trimble Access, go to Instrument > IMU Calibration and follow the figure-8 rotation sequence.
  3. Hold the pole still during the observation — tilt compensation works best when the pole is stationary.
  4. If the site geometry requires a steep pole angle, use a direct nadir shot with a carefully plumbed pole rather than relying on tilt compensation at extreme angles.
  5. After recalibration, check tilt indicator in Trimble Access — ERR003 should clear if you're within the operating range and IMU is calibrated.

When to Send It In for Service

If ERR003 appears at pole angles clearly within the rated range (under 10 degrees) and after successful IMU calibration, the IMU may have been damaged. Trimble authorized service can test and replace IMU components. Turnaround 7-14 days.

Preventing ERR003 in the Future

Calibrate the IMU at the start of each session. Avoid dropping the pole-mounted receiver — impacts are the primary cause of IMU damage. When working on steep ground, focus on keeping the pole as vertical as possible rather than depending on maximum compensation range.
