What Goes in a Laser Kit
A working laser setup is more than the laser. Here's every piece, what it does, and how to match them so it all works together the day it shows up.
Every piece below is gear we stock and ship free across the United States — and our lasers ship as matched, ready-to-work packages.
The Laser
CoreThe heart of the kit. A rotary laser creates a level or sloped reference plane across the whole site; a grade laser dials in precise single or dual slopes; a pipe laser projects grade down a trench. Pick the laser to match the work first — everything else supports it.
Rotary for site prep & foundations · Grade lasers for slope work · Pipe lasers for utilities.
Shop lasers →The Receiver
CoreOutdoors you can't see the beam, so a receiver (detector) catches it and tells you on-grade, high, or low. Handheld receivers clamp to a rod for grade-checking by hand; machine receivers mount on a mast on a dozer or excavator and show the operator in the cab.
Match the receiver's channel/frequency to your laser brand. Handheld for crews on foot, machine display for equipment.
Shop receivers →The Tripod
CoreHolds the laser steady at working height. Get a flat-head or dome-head (5/8"-11) to match your laser's mount. Elevating tripods crank the laser up without re-leveling — handy for tall reference setups.
Confirm the head thread matches your laser. Heavier-duty legs hold calibration better on rough ground.
Shop tripods →The Grade Rod
CoreA graduated rod the receiver clamps to. You read elevation where the receiver catches the beam. Available in feet/inches or tenths/hundredths — match it to how your plans are marked.
Inches for residential/general, tenths for engineering/DOT plans. Telescoping rods pack down for transport.
Shop rods →Accessories
OptionalThe extras that keep the kit working: rechargeable battery packs, remote controls, wall mounts, targets, ceiling/grade clamps, and hard cases. Not strictly required, but they cut downtime and protect your investment.
A spare battery and a hard case pay for themselves on the first long week.
Shop accessories →Tip: buy it as a package
Most of our lasers ship as packages that already include a matched receiver, tripod, and rod — so you know everything works together and you save versus buying piece by piece. If you'd rather hand-pick, the links above take you straight to each category.
Common Questions
- What goes in a complete laser level kit?
- A working laser kit has four core pieces — the laser (rotary, grade, or pipe), a receiver/detector, a tripod, and a grade rod — plus accessories like batteries, a remote, and a hard case. The laser is chosen first to match the work, and everything else supports it.
- Do I need a receiver with my laser?
- Outdoors, yes. You generally cannot see the beam in daylight, so the receiver catches it and tells you on-grade, high, or low. Match the receiver’s channel/frequency to your laser brand — handheld for crews on foot, machine-display for equipment.
- Should I buy a laser kit or piece it together?
- Most of our lasers ship as packages that already include a matched receiver, tripod, and rod, so everything is guaranteed to work together and it costs less than buying piece by piece. Hand-picking only makes sense when you already own compatible components.
- How do I know the tripod and rod fit my laser?
- Match the tripod head thread (commonly 5/8"-11) to your laser’s mount, and pick a grade rod marked the way your plans read — feet/inches for residential and general work, tenths/hundredths for engineering and DOT plans.
