Target lock lost — ATR (Automatic Target Recognition) has lost the prism and cannot reacquire.

Applies to: S3, S5, S7, S9
What Does E001 Mean?
E001 on Trimble total stations means the ATR system has lost track of the prism target. Trimble's ATR uses a CCD sensor to detect and lock onto the prism's retroreflective signal — when that signal is blocked or lost, E001 appears. This is an operational condition rather than a hardware failure in most cases.
ATR lock loss is common when the prism moves behind an obstruction (equipment, structure, crew member walking between instrument and target), or when the prism is moved faster than the tracking system can follow. On robotic instruments (S7, S9), ATR loss stops automatic data collection until lock is re-established. On semi-robotic (S3, S5), the operator must manually re-aim.
Common Causes of E001
- Prism passed behind an obstruction — equipment, column, crew member between instrument and target
- Prism moved faster than the ATR tracking rate — particularly on robotic setups following a moving target at speed
- Direct sun on the prism face saturating the ATR sensor
- Target prism tilted excessively away from the instrument
- ATR search window too narrow for the current target distance
- ATR CCD sensor contaminated or damaged
How to Fix Trimble E001 — Step by Step
- Walk to a clear line of sight between instrument and prism
- Point the instrument manually at the prism using the eyepiece or visual target
- Press the ATR search button — the instrument searches a window around the aimed direction
- If ATR acquires the prism, the E001 clears and tracking resumes
- If in direct sun, shade the prism face or wait for cloud cover
- If ATR repeatedly fails with clear line of sight: run ATR calibration from the instrument menu
- If ATR calibration doesn't resolve it: the ATR sensor needs service
When to Send It In for Service
ATR CCD replacement and calibration at Trimble authorized service. Turnaround 7-14 days. Cost $400-700.
Preventing E001 in the Future
Plan setups to minimize obstructions between instrument and working area. Shade prisms in direct sun. Calibrate ATR at the start of major projects.
