What laser level do most construction crews use?
Self-leveling rotary lasers dominate exterior construction — the Topcon RL-H5A and Spectra Precision LL300N are the two most common on North American sites. Both are drop-rated, weatherproof, and run long on batteries; the differences come down to receiver packages, warranty, and brand ecosystem.
What accuracy should a construction laser have?
Contractor-grade rotary lasers hold about ±1/16 inch per 100 feet. That is tighter than nearly all concrete and grading tolerances. Cheaper homeowner units at ±1/4 inch per 100 feet can put you outside spec on bigger pours — check the spec sheet, not the marketing.
Do I need a receiver (detector)?
Outdoors, yes — the beam is invisible in daylight. The receiver clamps to a grade rod and signals above/on/below grade. Most contractor packages include one; machine-control receivers extend the same laser to dozer and skid-steer blades.
Green beam or red beam?
Green is markedly more visible to the eye indoors, which matters for interior layout without a receiver. Outdoors with a receiver, beam color barely matters — red models cost less and run longer on a charge. Buy green for interior visibility, red for outdoor receiver work.
