Laser Levels for Grading
The Short Answer
For grading work you want a grade laser — a rotary laser that tilts its beam plane to a set slope — rather than a level-only laser. Single-grade models handle drainage runs and sloped pads; dual-slope models set compound grades for crowned roads and parking lots. Express Tools carries Spectra Precision GL-series and Topcon RL-200 dual-grade lasers.
A standard rotary laser projects a dead-level plane — fine for slabs and footings, but grading is rarely flat. Grade lasers dial in slope (e.g., 1.5% fall to a catch basin) so the receiver reads on-grade along the entire run, and dual-slope models set independent X and Y grades for compound surfaces.
Match the laser to the work: single-grade for drainage and simple falls, dual-slope for roads, pads, and sports fields, and pair any of them with a machine-control receiver to put grade in the cab.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a regular rotary laser for grading?
For flat work, yes. For sloped work you would have to trick a level laser with offset math at every stake — slow and error-prone. A grade laser tilts the entire beam plane to the design slope so every receiver reading is directly on-grade. If you grade for drainage regularly, the grade laser pays for itself fast.
Single grade vs dual slope — what is the difference?
Single-grade lasers slope the beam on one axis — right for pipe runs, swales, and simple falls. Dual-slope lasers set two independent axes simultaneously, which is what crowned roads, tapered pads, and parking lots with compound drainage require.
What slope range do grade lasers cover?
Typical construction grade lasers cover roughly -10% to +15% per axis, with fine adjustment to hundredths of a percent. Check the spec for your steepest design grade — steep embankment work can exceed entry-level ranges.
How do I document that finished grade matched design?
Log grade checks as you verify: station, design elevation, actual reading, and pass/fail. Gradelog — our field documentation app — records each check with GPS and photos and produces the as-built grade report your inspector or GC asks for.
