E1 — Outside Self-Leveling Range

E1 is the most common GL622 error. The instrument uses an electronic servo-controlled compensator to self-level within ±5° of horizontal (or within ±5° of the programmed grade in slope mode). When the tripod tilt exceeds this range, the compensator motor cannot physically reach the target position — the unit displays E1 and stops rotating. This is normal protective behavior: rotating an out-of-level beam creates inaccurate reference grades.

E1 happens most often when a tripod leg sinks into soft soil, when the instrument is set up on a steep slope without proper leg extension compensation, or when grade mode is set to a significant slope on a tripod that wasn't pre-positioned toward that slope. The fix is always tripod adjustment followed by a power cycle.

E2 — Battery Voltage Insufficient

E2 means the battery voltage has dropped below the threshold needed to power the compensator leveling motors. The leveling motors are the highest-current component in the GL622 — they require a brief high-current pulse at startup. A battery at 25% charge may power the display and wireless receiver but cannot sustain the motor startup current, resulting in E2. This is more pronounced in cold weather where battery output voltage is inherently lower.

E2 can also appear after a battery has been in service for 2–3 years — even when "fully charged," an aged pack can no longer sustain voltage under motor load. If E2 appears consistently even with a just-charged battery, the pack needs replacement rather than additional charging.

E3 — Compensator System Fault

E3 indicates the compensator system encountered a fault during the leveling sequence. Unlike E1 (which means the target is out of range) and E2 (which means insufficient power), E3 means the compensator attempted to level and failed. Causes include: transport vibration displacing the pendulum; physical impact damage from a drop; extreme cold stiffening the damping fluid; and in rare cases, compensator motor failure. E3 after a drop is more serious than E3 after transport — the former may require service while the latter often clears with a reset.

Fixing E1 on the Spectra GL622

1. Check the bubble vial: Look at the circular bubble vial on the GL622 base plate. The bubble should be inside the inner circle for reliable leveling. If it is between the inner and outer circles, E1 may or may not appear depending on the exact tilt. If it is outside the outer circle, E1 is certain.
2. Adjust tripod legs: On the GL622 tripod, the legs adjust by releasing the clamp and sliding. Identify which leg is causing the tilt and extend or shorten it. Adjust in small increments and re-check the bubble after each adjustment — overcompensating leads to chasing the bubble back and forth.

Fixing E3 on the Spectra GL622
