What Does E05 Mean?
E05 on Leica total stations indicates a memory system error — either the internal flash memory has a read/write fault, or the instrument detected data corruption during a write operation. Modern Leica total stations store job data, calibration values, and firmware on internal flash memory; E05 means one of these storage areas has a problem.
Memory errors can be caused by a failing flash memory chip, a corrupted file system from interrupted write operations (power loss during data save), or physical shock affecting memory chip contacts. Most E05 events are recoverable through a proper power cycle or factory reset — but if calibration data is corrupted, the instrument may need factory recalibration after recovery.
Common Causes of E05
- Power loss during data write — instrument turned off or battery failed mid-save
- Flash memory chip degradation after many write cycles
- Data corruption from a voltage spike or improper shutdown
- Physical shock affecting internal memory chip connections
- File system corruption from repeated improper shutdowns
How to Fix Leica E05 — Step by Step
- Note any measurements not yet saved — they may be lost after the following steps
- Full power cycle: remove battery, wait 60 seconds, reinstall, power on
- If E05 clears: back up all data immediately via USB export
- Check that all data is intact. If calibration data was lost, schedule factory recalibration
- If E05 persists after power cycle: try a factory reset (note: this erases all jobs and settings)
- If E05 persists after factory reset: memory hardware needs service
When to Send It In for Service
Flash memory replacement and factory recalibration at Leica authorized service. Turnaround 10-14 days. Back up data before shipping.
Preventing E05 in the Future
Always use proper shutdown procedures — never remove the battery while the instrument is writing data. Export job data regularly to controller or USB rather than relying solely on instrument storage.
