Sokkia Total Station Data Card / Memory Card Error: What It Means and How to Fix It

What Is the Sokkia Card Error?

Sokkia total stations in the SET, CX, and iX series use removable data cards to store job files, coordinates, and measurement data for transfer to a PC. Older models (SET-X, SET-B) use CompactFlash (CF) cards, while newer models (CX-105, iX-600) use SD or SDHC cards. The instrument displays a card error whenever it detects a problem accessing the card, including:

• Card Not Found: No card detected in the slot — card is missing or not seated
• Card Error / Read Error: Card is detected but cannot be read — file system corruption or incompatible format
• Write Error / Card Full: Card has no remaining space and new data cannot be written
• Write Protect Error: SD card write-protect tab is in the locked position
• Card Format Error: Card was formatted with NTFS or exFAT — Sokkia instruments only support FAT16 or FAT32

Common Causes of the Sokkia Card Error

• Card not fully seated in slot — the slot latch did not click, or the card was inserted at an angle
• SD write-protect tab in locked position — the small physical tab on the SD card is slid toward "LOCK"
• Card formatted as NTFS or exFAT — formatted on a Windows PC with default settings that use incompatible file systems
• File system corruption — power was removed during a write operation, corrupting the FAT directory
• Card capacity too large — older Sokkia models (SET-B series) may not support SDHC cards above 2GB
• Incompatible card brand — some off-brand CF/SD cards have timing characteristics outside the instrument's specification
• Dirty card contacts — dust or corrosion on the gold contacts preventing reliable electrical connection
• Card slot damage — bent pins in the card slot (common after a card is inserted forcefully the wrong way)

How to Fix the Sokkia Total Station Card Error — Step by Step

1. Remove and re-insert the card: Power off the total station. Remove the data card completely, inspect it visually, then re-insert it firmly until the slot latch clicks. Power the instrument back on and check if the card is recognized.
2. Check the write-protect tab (SD cards): On SD and SDHC cards, locate the small plastic tab on the left edge. Slide it toward the card label (away from the metal contacts) to unlock. A locked card will always produce a write-protect error.
3. Clean the card contacts: Use a clean, dry cotton swab or compressed air to clean the gold contacts on the card and the contacts visible inside the card slot. Do not use liquids.
4. Format the card using the instrument: Navigate to Menu → Memory → Card → Format. This formats the card with FAT16 or FAT32 as required by the instrument. WARNING: formatting deletes all data on the card — ensure data is backed up first.
5. Format with a PC using the correct file system: If the instrument's format function fails, format the card on a PC: right-click the drive in Windows Explorer → Format → select FAT32 (for cards 2GB+) or FAT (FAT16) for cards under 2GB → uncheck Quick Format → Format.
6. Use a lower-capacity card: If your Sokkia model is older (pre-2010 SET or SET-B series), try a 1GB or 2GB card formatted FAT16 instead of a 4GB+ SDHC card.
7. Test with a known-good card: Try a different card from a reputable brand (SanDisk, Lexar) to rule out a defective card. Sokkia recommends SanDisk for compatibility.
8. Inspect the card slot: With a flashlight, inspect the card slot contacts for bent pins. If pins are damaged, the instrument requires service.

Transferring Data Without the Card

If the card cannot be read and you need to recover data urgently, Sokkia CX and iX series instruments support direct PC connection via USB cable using the Sokkia Link software (or MAGNET Office for Topcon/Sokkia compatibility). Internal memory data can be transferred via USB even when the external card slot is non-functional. Older SET-B and SET-X series support RS-232 serial transfer using Sokkia Link 2.0.

Recommended Data Cards for Sokkia Total Stations

For CX-105/CX-107: SanDisk 4GB SDHC (FAT32, Class 4 or 6). For iX-1000/iX-600: SanDisk 8GB SDHC (FAT32, Class 10). For SET-B/SET-X: SanDisk 1GB or 2GB CompactFlash (FAT16). Avoid high-endurance or "industrial" SD cards with unusual timing profiles — standard consumer cards are more reliably compatible with older Sokkia firmware.
