Automatic Levels
The Short Answer
An automatic level (builder’s level) is a telescope-based instrument that self-compensates to hold a perfectly level line of sight, used with a grade rod to run elevations and check grade. Express Tools carries David White AL8-series automatic levels in 26x and 32x magnification, bare or in complete tripod-and-rod packages.
Automatic levels are the workhorse optical instrument for running grades: set up, rough-level the bubble, and the internal compensator locks the line of sight dead level. With a grade rod and one helper you can carry elevation across a site, check subgrade, and verify forms — no batteries, no electronics to fail.
Choose magnification by working range: 26x covers most residential and utility work; 32x tightens rod readings at longer distances for larger sites. Packages bundle a flat-head tripod and a rod graduated in inches or tenths.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does an automatic level do?
It gives you a perfectly level line of sight through a telescope. Reading a graduated rod through that telescope tells you the elevation difference between points — which is how crews set grade stakes, check subgrade and footings, and carry benchmarks across a site.
What does "automatic" mean — is it self-leveling?
Yes, within a range. You rough-level the instrument with the circular bubble and three leveling screws; an internal wire-hung compensator then automatically holds the sight line exactly level. It removes the tedious precise-leveling step older dumpy levels required.
26x or 32x magnification — which should I buy?
26x is plenty for shots inside roughly 200 feet — typical residential foundations and utility runs. 32x makes rod graduations easier to resolve at longer distances on commercial sites. If in doubt and the budget allows, buy the 32x.
Automatic level vs rotary laser — which do I need?
A rotary laser with a receiver lets one person check grade anywhere on site and never needs a second set of eyes, which is why production grading crews run lasers. An automatic level is cheaper, needs no batteries, and doubles as a teaching and check instrument. Many crews keep one of each.
