Quick Answer
What is the Leica Geosystems DD120?
The Leica Detect DD120 Utility Locator Base Model (60Hz) is a professional electromagnetic cable and pipe locator manufactured by Leica Geosystems, designed for active and passive detection of buried utilities at 60Hz frequency. It detects energized power cables passively and traces signals from compatible transmitters, making it essential for 811 compliance and excavation site safety.
What contractors use this accessories for
811 One-Call Compliance & Dig Safe Operations
Utility locators and excavation contractors use the DD120 to mark and verify buried utilities before breaking ground, ensuring compliance with One-Call notification systems and state/local dig-safe regulations. The passive 60Hz detection identifies energized power lines immediately, confirming service locations for safe, legal excavation.
Active Line Tracing with Signal Transmitter
When paired with a Leica DA175 transmitter or compatible signal generator, contractors use the DD120 to actively trace cable and pipe runs across job sites. This active method confirms service routing, identifies multiple parallel services, and determines approximate burial depth before potholing.
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) Site Assessment
HDD contractors deploy the DD120 during bore path surveys to locate existing subsurface utilities and prevent collision during drilling operations. The locator maps utility corridors and identifies conflict zones, allowing crews to adjust drilling paths or request hand excavation of critical service areas.
Potholing & Vacuum Excavation Operations
Contractors performing potholing or vacuum excavation use the DD120 to confirm utility location in the exact dig area before breaking ground. The depth estimation feature guides safe excavation depth and prevents striking cables or pipes during precise subsurface exposure.
Private Utility Locating (PUL) & Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE)
Civil engineers and private locating contractors use the DD120 for comprehensive utility mapping on complex sites, documenting service locations for design, planning, and risk assessment. The electromagnetic detection capability supports both metallic and energized services, providing complete subsurface utility profiles.

Device Only What You Need to Know
The DD120 Device Only is the locator unit alone. It works as a standalone tool for passive detection — picking up signals from live, energized power cables and metallic utilities already carrying current (Power mode, 60Hz) or a signal (Radio mode). No additional equipment is required for this use.
However, for full utility locating capability, you will also need:
- DA175 Signal Transmitter (Art. 949370) — Required for depth estimation, tracing dead/de-energized cables, and active route tracing. Included in the Depth Package.
- Midi Sonde (Art. 850289) — Required to locate non-metallic and PVC pipes, drains, and sewers. Included in the Plumbers Package.
- Carry Bag (Art. 850276 or 872942) — Recommended for safe transport and storage on the job site.
Already own a DA175? The Device Only is the right choice — you get a fresh DD120 locator that pairs directly with your existing transmitter and accessories. Not sure which package is right for your application? Call us at 1-877-866-5721 — we'll help you figure it out.
